ST1.7 STEM educators collaborate as an interdisciplinary team to plan, implement, and improve integrated STEM learning experiences.
Response:
McNair STEM Academy teachers meet regularly to plan, collaborate, and create unique real world problem solving opportunities. McNair STEM teachers participate in professional learning opportunities that help integrate complex lessons. McNair STEM teachers utilize monthly afterschool “think tanks” to develop new STEM builds, problem solve, and improve STEM instruction.
Narrative:
Our teachers are proficient facilitators of classroom instruction. They are provided structured, stable time and space for weekly teamwork sessions which are essential to the success of a PLC (Professional Learning Community). These sessions allow teachers time to discuss, analyze, evaluate, and track student data, growth, and achievement, develop curricula, share resources, implement best practices, and strategize on how students can self-direct their learning experiences. STEM teachers meet bi-weekly with the STEM Coordinator to discuss integration of units into all subject areas. The group reviews and plans the execution of the upcoming STEM activities. STEM teachers also collaborate during trainings on the next steps for units, the expectations, and the outcomes that should be a result of the students’ experiences in the STEM activities.
Strengths:
Our STEM Academy teachers take part in rigorous professional development. These trainings support the development of teacher knowledge and growth (pedagogy) by providing innovative opportunities for teachers to promote the development and delivery of a rigorous content to students. The students are given greater opportunities to self-direct their learning because of the quality planning and professional development of the teachers.
Weaknesses:
We are improving in the area of providing students with learning contracts to support their growth and development. Many of our students thrive with continued feedback during their learning episodes.
